How Has COVID Affected Mental Health and Alcohol Use? – New Survey Findings

How Has COVID Affected Mental Health and Alcohol Use? - New Survey Findings

The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting fallout have introduced dramatic life changes for many of us. From higher anxiety and depression levels to experiences of grief and loss, few lives have been left untouched by the developments of the last few months.

At FHE Health, our thoughts are with those most affected by the health crisis. We’re also very mindful of the potentially damaging, behavioral effects of these seismic changes in Americans’ lives—so we conducted a survey of 500 respondents to gather and analyze data related to substance use and mental health wellness during this time. The results show many Americans are struggling with healthy coping mechanisms and compromised mental health right now.

How the Coronavirus Has Affected Americans’ Work and Finances

While lost income, reduced work hours, and a spike in unemployment claims were to be expected, we also wanted to know how respondents working from home were faring. Were they feeling more or less productive prior to the pandemic? The answer—see below—was surprising.

Another big unknown in the work-and-finances equation: the stimulus check and its impact on Americans’ spending habits. Brace yourself for the percentage of respondents who said they spent their money on alcohol.

Pandemic Survey Results on Mental Health and Work

The Story on Alcohol Consumption and Other Drug Use During Lockdown

As you might imagine, when roughly one in three of our respondents spent their stimulus money on alcohol, there’s probably more to the story about drug and alcohol use during the lockdown. And there is—from the jaw-dropping percentage of respondents who said they stockpiled alcohol to the number of people who drink or get high during work hours to the primary reason people drink. (Can you guess what it is?) Those eye-opening revelations are below.

Pandemic Survey Results - Alcohol and Substance Use

How Has COVID Affected Mental Health? Before and After The Pandemic

Not surprisingly, respondents reported a dip in their mental health after COVID-19. More interesting, though, were the newly developed mental health disorders and issues that respondents said they were experiencing during the quarantine—and, the various stress coping tools they said they were using to stay healthy….

Our Survey Demographic Data

We surveyed 508 self-selecting respondents using Amazon Mechanical Turk system. Using survey platform Mechanical Turk, we had 508 unique users complete a 30 point questionnaire. The participants from this group were not in any way weighted or modified to correct for a standard demographic. A select few results were removed from the initial dataset due to unrealistic completion time. If you have any questions about our survey or would like to re-use any survey data please let us know and cite our original study. Feel free to share this article and our results!
