The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting fallout have introduced dramatic life changes for many of us. From higher anxiety and depression levels to experiences of grief and loss, few lives have been left untouched by the developments of the last few months.
At FHE Health, our thoughts are with those most affected by the health crisis. We’re also very mindful of the potentially damaging, behavioral effects of these seismic changes in Americans’ lives—so we conducted a survey of 500 respondents to gather and analyze data related to substance use and mental health wellness during this time. The results show many Americans are struggling with healthy coping mechanisms and compromised mental health right now.
How the Coronavirus Has Affected Americans’ Work and Finances
While lost income, reduced work hours, and a spike in unemployment claims were to be expected, we also wanted to know how respondents working from home were faring. Were they feeling more or less productive prior to the pandemic? The answer—see below—was surprising.
Another big unknown in the work-and-finances equation: the stimulus check and its impact on Americans’ spending habits. Brace yourself for the percentage of respondents who said they spent their money on alcohol.
The Story on Alcohol Consumption and Other Drug Use During Lockdown
As you might imagine, when roughly one in three of our respondents spent their stimulus money on alcohol, there’s probably more to the story about drug and alcohol use during the lockdown. And there is—from the jaw-dropping percentage of respondents who said they stockpiled alcohol to the number of people who drink or get high during work hours to the primary reason people drink. How Has COVID Affected Mental Health? Before and After The Pandemic
Not surprisingly, respondents reported a dip in their mental health after COVID-19.
