At FHE Health, we know recovery outcomes improve with a comprehensive treatment approach that addresses the whole person (body, mind, and spirit). Medical and behavioral therapies are a central component of this approach and should be integrated with other evidence-based, health-and-wellness interventions—for optimal results.
Our brand-new Wellness Center, consisting of a fully equipped gym, pool, green space, and neuro and massage therapy rooms, is where any of our patients:
- can access additional supports for early recovery and beyond;
- learn how to develop a healthy recovery lifestyle for life after rehab;
- and, take advantage of cutting-edge tools for speeding and boosting their recovery.
Patients can choose from the following services through the Wellness Center:
- Neuro rehab sessions that retrain and rewire the brain for optimal health, using the latest technologies from neuroscience
- Fitness services, including a well-equipped Gym and personal fitness programs with a fully credentialed fitness supervisor
- Yoga classes that help patients develop greater mind-body awareness and self-regulation through various breathing and stretching exercises
- Massage therapy that reduces pain and stress, promotes relaxation, and supports the body’s natural healing capabilities, by stimulating the central nervous system
- Breathwork therapy that helps the mind, body, and spirit release, process, and heal from deep-seated pain and trauma
- Acupuncture, an effective form of pain management that can alleviate cravings and withdrawal in early recovery
Neuro Rehab Sessions
Next to the Gym is our Neuro Suite. It consists of several rooms, (also known as “neuro labs”), where patients can go for individualized, neuro-rehabilitative therapy that, over a prescribed number of sessions, restores brain health safely and non-invasively. Using the latest advances in neuroscience, we’re able to find and therapeutically target areas of the brain that may be causing or contributing to a patient’s symptoms. With sophisticated brain mapping tools, we can also track that patient’s response to brain stimulation and quantify their progress. Most patients report a significant reduction in their symptoms, which helps to expedite and maximize recovery.
A State-of-the-Art Gym with Fitness Services
FHE’s gym is open to all patients and offers a fully equipped weightlifting area, mats for core work, medicine balls, resistance bands, and top-of-the-line exercise machines, including treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes, as well as cable machines for muscle strengthening. A fully credentialed fitness supervisor, highly trained in sports fitness, is on site to provide personal training and customized workout plans.
Many patients with co-occurring physical issues, such as chronic pain or diabetes, will receive a doctor’s recommendation to exercise as part of their treatment plan. Our fitness supervisor tailors individualized workout plans for their specific needs, including for after rehab. This way patients have an exercise routine in place for when they leave treatment.
How Exercise and Fitness Improve Treatment Outcomes
The therapeutic benefits of exercise for people with mental health disorders are extensive, according to a large body of research. Just about any kind of exercise releases “feel-good” endorphins that reduce anxiety and depression and change a negative mood or outlook for the better. Exercise can also improve cognitive functioning and lift low self-esteem. For patients with schizophrenia or other mental health conditions that involve medication-related weight gain, exercise can be a very effective preventative health measure.
Research has also shown that recovery outcomes for people with drug and alcohol addiction improve significantly with a regular exercise regimen. Different studies have revealed similar results: that whether it’s regular swimming, running, or another program of exercise, fitness activity can reduce drug or alcohol cravings, thereby reducing the risks of relapse.
Yoga Classes
With the help of two instructors, we provide multiple yoga classes on a weekly basis. During the one-hour class, our patients have the opportunity to learn simple stretching and breathing exercises that can relieve symptoms in detox and early recovery, encourage positive self-connection and self-love, improve emotional self-awareness, and provide an introduction to meditation and spirituality. Yoga has also proven beneficial for patients whose primary diagnosis is a mental health disorder like anxiety, depression, or another condition.
Massage Therapy
As another evidence-based support for mental health and addiction recovery, massage therapy at FHE is open to everyone. Patients can receive an individual session that helps them relax, reduces stress, and relieves chronic pain by addressing pain points. Therapeutic touch can help patients with a history of trauma reconnect with their bodies and find healing through touch.
Breathwork Therapy
This intervention, also known as “integral breath therapy,” uses various breathing techniques to facilitate deep inner healing from trauma and other past mental, emotional, and even physical wounds. A certified breathwork therapist leads patients in these group sessions. Traumatic memories, sensations, and associations can encode themselves in the body, often subconsciously. Through therapeutic breathing, patients can release the residual, painful and psychologically harmful effects of past traumas.
Acupuncture is available on a once-weekly basis to patients who request it. The practice, derived from traditional Chinese medicine, involves the insertion of very tiny needles at strategic points along the body. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s production of “feel-good” endorphins, which relieve pain and alleviate withdrawal symptoms.
A Pool and Green Space for Relaxation and Sports Recreation
In addition to the gym, the Wellness Center comprises two pools where patients can relax and soak up the sun. There’s also an inviting green space where patients can gather to play volleyball, basketball, soccer, or badminton.
The goal with all of these services and amenities is to promote health, fitness, and overall wellbeing as an integrated part of FHE’s overall mission: To help every patient in our care achieve the very best treatment outcome possible.
