At FHE Health in Deerfield Beach, Florida, evidence-based care starts with understanding you as a whole person. Our team looks at your mental health, substance use history, physical health, strengths, and goals to build a treatment plan that fits your needs rather than placing you into a standard program.
But what does “evidence-based” treatment mean, and why is it so important for your recovery?
What Makes Treatment Evidence-Based?
Evidence-based treatment pairs scientifically validated therapies with clinical expertise and ongoing evaluation. These approaches have been extensively studied and shown to improve outcomes for people with substance use disorders, mental health conditions, trauma, and co-occurring disorders. If treatment isn’t evidence-based, that means there’s no science or proof behind it, and it won’t support sustainable recovery.
At FHE Health, evidence-based care includes:
- Comprehensive clinical assessments evaluating substance use, psychiatric symptoms, trauma history, withdrawal risk, medical needs, family dynamics, and motivation for treatment.
- Screening tools, including the PHQ-9, GAD-7, Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), TCU Motivation Form, CIWA for alcohol withdrawal, ASAM Criteria, and LOCUS assessments, to determine appropriate treatment needs and level of care.
- Individualized treatment plans created by your primary therapist and expanded based on specialized services, progress, and evolving clinical needs.
- Licensed behavioral health professionals who provide addiction treatment, mental health care, trauma treatment, medical services, and specialized therapies.
- Comprehensive discharge planning and continuing care coordination to help you transition successfully into the next phase of recovery.

How FHE Health Uses Evidence-Based Treatment
Evidence-based care is woven throughout every level of your treatment at FHE Health. Here are some of the ways we use it:
-
Comprehensive Assessment and Level of Care
When you start treatment at FHE Health, we conduct an evaluation using the ASAM Criteria to understand your overall health and determine the most appropriate level of care.
If you have primary mental health conditions, substance use disorders, or both, you will receive evaluations tailored to your specific challenges. Because FHE Health is licensed to provide both mental health and substance use treatment, we can treat either condition as the primary focus while addressing co-occurring disorders.
-
Individualized Treatment Planning
Treatment planning is collaborative and evolves throughout your stay.
Your therapists develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and your personal recovery goals. As treatment progresses, physicians, nurses, specialists, and other members of the care team offer recommendations for your continued treatment.
This approach allows you to engage in the therapies most effective for your recovery instead of just following a standardized schedule.
-
Evidence-Based Therapeutic Approaches
The traditional therapeutic approaches we offer are rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), which serve as the core models across all of our programs.
Because we have a large clinical staff with diverse specialties, you may also receive:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and trauma-informed interventions
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Family therapy, including Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT)
- Medical detox for opioid and alcohol withdrawal
- Relapse prevention counseling
- Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Ketamine infusion therapy
We also participate in ongoing continuing education, including monthly CEU training, quarterly educational programs, HealthStream learning modules, and specialized training in emerging evidence-based therapies to ensure treatment remains aligned with current best practices.
-
Medication-Assisted Treatment
FHE Health incorporates medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when clinically appropriate.
Services include:
- Methadone-assisted detoxification
- Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone) maintenance injections
- Suboxone initiation during inpatient treatment with coordinated referral to community MAT providers following discharge
If you continue MAT after treatment, we partner with established community providers to ensure continuity of medication management and ongoing recovery support.
-
Measuring Treatment Outcomes
Throughout treatment, you will receive outcome assessments to monitor improvements in depression, anxiety, motivation, and treatment engagement. We compare admission and discharge assessment results to evaluate progress and make adjustments as needed.
In addition, we collect patient satisfaction surveys, review feedback, and track grievances to continuously improve your clinical care.
-
Clinical Oversight and Quality Assurance
Therapists regularly receive supervision and performance feedback from clinical leadership. Nurses, behavioral health technicians, physicians, and other professionals participate in structured oversight. A dedicated quality assurance team reviews documentation, regulatory compliance, ethical standards, and treatment quality to ensure consistent care throughout our facility.
How Evidence-Based Care Supports Long-Term Recovery
Evidence-based care supports long-term recovery by focusing on treatments that have been carefully studied and shown to help. These approaches address the thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and health concerns that often contribute to substance use or mental health symptoms. Regular assessments also give our treatment team a clear picture of what you’re experiencing, so your care is based on your actual needs rather than assumptions.
It also allows your treatment plan to change as you do. Your clinicians can track your response to therapy, medication, and other services, then adjust their approach when something isn’t helping enough. Over time, this helps you better understand your symptoms, practice healthier ways of responding to stress, and build skills you can continue using after treatment ends.
