Lamar Odom Still Dealing with the Stigma of Addiction

Lamar Odom Still Dealing with the Stigma of Addiction

Professional athletes are constantly in the news for their fame, but their private lives – including their addictions – are unfortunately frequent fodder for the press.

Recently Lamar Odom was the subject of a brutal media attack by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who said of Phil Jackson that “his first move as executive of the New York Knicks was to sign Lamar Odom, who was on crack!”

Needless to say, Odom needed to reply. He took to Twitter, quoting a letter written by his lawyer, Sam Zangeneh, who railed against Smith’s inappropriate statement. Zanganeh stood in support of all athletes who are struggling with addiction.

“Think about others who are battling addiction. Those who have not had the strength or opportunity to share their struggle like Lamar. Imagine the effect this grotesque statement would have on any young athlete who is privately fighting this disease.”

Support for Those in the Addiction Recovery Community

We must remember that those struggling with addiction need the kind of support that empowers their recovery, not words that belittle their battle with addiction. Certainly for an individual with a background like Lamar Odom, the press needs to be held to a higher standard of decency.
