Therapy, The Cornerstone of Successful Addiction Recovery

There are so many types of therapy and so many different forms of substance abuse recovery programs. It can be a little intimidating for a person struggling with drug or alcohol addiction researching detox and rehabilitation centers in Florida, psychiatric services might be one of the first things on a person’s mind. Therapy can help struggling addicts reach for sobriety, in fact many would say it’s the cornerstone of building a new sober way of life. The addict may feel scared and daunted by the process, not to mention overwhelmed wondering what happens if they choose the wrong program. The good news is at FHE Health, a patient’s recovery program is shaped to fit their individual needs including the particular kind of addiction they deal with, their history of mental health and trauma, the sort of life they live. We offer different kinds of therapy in our programs so that we can adapt recovery to the patient in question. If a patient is seeking recovery programs out they should call the program to better understand the treatments available to them.

Common Types of Therapies in Substance Abuse Recovery Programs

There are a lot of different kinds of therapies represented in recovery centers throughout the United States. Not all of them are available everywhere, but learning about these therapies can help you spot a program that resonates with you. Here’s a list of some common therapies that can help patients as they detox from a chemical dependency on drugs or alcohol, as they go through rehabilitation, and as they face a different kind of life in relapse prevention therapy after they leave rehab.

Psychotherapy or Talk Therapy: According to the American Psychiatric Association this method of therapy can be productive for a wide variety of individuals, with any number of different mental health disorders or trauma. Psychotherapy can help with issues like the loss of a loved one, post trauma due to abuse or neglect, complications from mental health disorders such as bipolar disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. This strategy of therapeutic treatment can be short term or long term.  More than anything the success of psychotherapy is contingent on finding a therapist you can build a truly trusting relationship with, otherwise it will be difficult to be truly honest during your sessions.

Behavioral Therapies: Behavior therapies are centered around helping a patient recognize their own behavioral tendencies, helping them notice the ebb and flow of moods and the emotional reactions that different situations engender within them. Behavioral therapy is particularly useful for the person struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Learning life skills that can assist in will power helps a person struggling through detoxification to get sober, and working their way through rehab and aftercare to stay sober. Behavioral therapies start with the patient working to fully understand their disease, the science of what addiction does to the body, and the context of what got them to this point in their lives. This kind of understanding helps them to employ the skills they learn in order to shift the way they behave into something more intentional.

Creative Therapy: Some facilities offer Creative types of therapy such as art therapy, writing, dance, drama therapy etc. These therapies can be useful as a patient employs their subconscious and creativity to express what sometimes words cannot.

Integrative Therapies: An integrative approach of therapy is where a therapist stitches together different strategies for different kinds of effect with each individual patient. There are countless kinds of therapies available to people struggling with addiction.
