Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at FHE Health
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for individuals experiencing depression and related mood conditions that have not adequately responded to traditional treatments such as medication and psychotherapy.
TMS uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. These pulses activate underactive neural pathways and support healthier brain functioning over time.
TMS does not require anesthesia, does not involve medication, and does not cause systemic side effects commonly associated with antidepressants. Patients remain awake and alert throughout treatment and may return to normal activities immediately afterward.
Who May Benefit from TMS
TMS may be appropriate for adults who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, have not achieved adequate relief from antidepressant medications, have experienced intolerable medication side effects, are seeking a non-medication treatment option, or have ongoing symptoms despite psychotherapy.
TMS May Assist:
- Diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder
- Inadequate response to antidepressants
- Intolerable medication side effects
- Seeking non-medication treatment
- Ongoing symptoms despite psychotherapy
All patients complete a psychiatric evaluation to determine medical appropriateness prior to beginning treatment.
What Treatment Involves
TMS treatment is provided on an outpatient basis, typically five days per week, Wednesday through Sunday, for approximately 40 sessions. Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes and is delivered in a comfortable clinical setting.
During each session, a magnetic coil is positioned on the scalp and delivers brief pulses that stimulate targeted brain regions. Patients may feel light tapping sensations during treatment.
Consistency is important for optimal results. Patients are encouraged to attend all scheduled sessions and communicate with staff if conflicts arise.
Clinical Monitoring and Support
Throughout treatment, patients receive ongoing monitoring by our psychiatric and clinical team, including regular symptom assessments, treatment adjustments when clinically indicated, coordination with referring providers, and supportive check-ins with staff.
Treatment parameters may be adjusted to maximize benefit and comfort. Patients are encouraged to share feedback regarding their experience so care may be optimized.
Psychiatric oversight ensures that treatment remains medically appropriate and responsive to individual needs.

The Patient Journey: What to Expect
The process begins with an initial call to admissions, followed by clinical screening and psychiatric evaluation to determine appropriateness.
Insurance benefits are verified prior to treatment initiation whenever possible.
During the first treatment session, mapping procedures are completed to determine optimal positioning and dosing parameters.
Sessions then continue on a structured schedule. Progress is monitored regularly, and treatment parameters may be adjusted as clinically indicated.
Upon completion of the treatment course, follow-up recommendations may include continued psychiatric care, therapy referrals, or maintenance planning when appropriate.
This structured pathway is designed to reduce uncertainty, improve adherence, and provide patients with a clear understanding of expectations at every stage of care.
