The world’s largest union representing union staff, the National Staff Organization (NSO), has officially named FHE Health their “preferred and recommended provider.” After a lengthy vetting process, the NSO Pension & Benefits Executive Committee determined that FHE Health offered the best addiction and mental health treatment options to NSO members.
The designation of the national behavioral health organization FHE Health as “program of choice” comes at a time when undue stress has burdened union executives who are further positioning themselves to meet members’ needs. The NSO has recommended FHE Health for mental and behavioral health services and as a union-side Employee Assistance Program to prioritize and protect members’ health.
The NSO is a national staffing union for American unions. Job protection is at the heart of its mission. The union has grown from a mere 35 members in a handful of states in 1969 to 4,093 (as of August 2018), encompassing 89 affiliates in 50 states and the District of Columbia. A significant portion of that growth came with the 1978 NSO Representative Assembly’s decision to organize associate staff members (now numbering 1700).
How the NSO is Leading the Charge for Improved Union Worker Health and Wellness
Thanks to the new agreement, thousands of union workers and their families will now have prioritized access to high-quality behavioral healthcare that is specialized for their unique treatment needs. FHE Health will also serve as the primary, acute inpatient care provider for PTSD, addiction and other mental health services.
FHE Health Director of Public and Community Relations Janet B. Gerhard was quick to praise the NSO for its leadership and initiative in supporting both the health and job security of its staff members.
“The National Staff Organization is a premier union that utilizes every effort to address critical issues on behalf of their members, Gerhard said. She added that “it is not lost on us that the NSO is advancing behavioral healthcare at a time when the nation has seen a significant rise in need.”
Gerhard noted that the coronavirus pandemic had underscored the important function that unions fulfill in protecting the health and safety America’s workforce.
