Rainn Wilson’s career in entertainment spans decades, but he’s undoubtedly best known for his portrayal of Dwight Schrute on the hit comedy series “The Office.” Through the years, he’s appeared in numerous films and television shows and earned many accolades, including three consecutive Emmy awards. One thing you may not have noticed during the many on-screen comedic appearances was Rainn Wilson’s depression. In recent years, the actor opened up about his struggles with mental health conditions and his battle with addiction.
History of Mental Health Struggles
In a podcast episode of “The Diary of a CEO,” Wilson traces his mental health struggles back to his childhood after his mother abandoned the family. The actor says he didn’t learn how to regulate his emotions in a household dominated by rage and anger. As I dove into recovery and the therapeutic process, I can pin that squarely on a lot of gross imbalances and trauma that I suffered as a child,” he explained.
He reveals, “These confluences of pain and difficulty and abuse and neglect, they caused me a lot of suffering later on, but at the same time, they caused me to be driven [and] to try and be the best version of myself.”
When Wilson was in his mid-20s, he was struggling to get his career off the ground and working in a bar. That’s when the actor’s mental health first started to spiral. Struggling to make ends meet while trying to build a name for himself as an actor served as a catalyst for Rainn Wilson’s depression and anxiety attacks.
“I wasn’t in the most healthy living environment. But at the same time, I remember getting these anxiety attacks that would leave me literally shaking on the floor … I started getting really depressed. There wasn’t really an event, but circumstances provided the perfect environment for a mental health breakdown.”
As a guest lecturer at Brown University, the actor explained why he left his depression untreated during his 20s and early 30s. “People didn’t really go to therapy back then,” he said. “We didn’t really have a word for a mental health epidemic. You just kind of just sucked it up.”
Rainn Wilson’s Depression During a Successful Career
As his living conditions improved, Wilson was still battling depression and anxiety. The actor explains how, despite living the life he wanted and working as an actor, he was still “chronically dissatisfied” and couldn’t understand why. However, he does credit depression and anxiety as the reasons for going on a “spiritual journey” to improve his outlook on life.
Wilson recalls having moments of depression even while working on the set of his most successful show. “There were times on ‘The Office’ when I really struggled because I really wasn’t happy … I spent a lot of unnecessary time in angst and anguish in that anxious discontent.”
One of the most important things Wilson learned in therapy was how to understand his own needs. He describes his thought process as, “Like, Well, I’m feeling anxious. What do you need? Do you need a nap? Do you need a hug? Do you need to eat something? Do you need reassurance? Do you need to unplug for a while and stay away from social media and phones? Do you need a day off? Do you need to exercise? That’s very helpful to always turn like, ‘I feel anxious, what do I need?’ At first, you won’t know. It’ll take years to develop that kind of reflex.”
The actor’s story serves as an example of how mental illness can affect anyone regardless of financial and professional success. Even while acting in a successful series and making millions of people laugh with his performance, Wilson was battling depression and substance abuse behind closed doors. There’s an undeniable connection between public figures and mental illness, even if few celebrities talk about it. “I think it’s important for people to understand that someone who officially ‘made it’ can still be unhappy,” he explains.
Rainn Wilson’s Message of Hope
The actor credits a combination of practices to his healing. Mental health and addiction struggles led to him seeking faith and spirituality. “I have a faith tradition that Baháʼí Faith gives me great meaning and purpose, and I love it very much, but daily mindfulness and meditation practice is, I think, maybe the most important thing that someone can start with, and it’s very easy. It doesn’t have to be complicated,” he told Parade in a recent interview.
Wilson is a huge proponent of a daily gratitude practice. He explains that he lists at least five things he feels grateful for every day and describes the habit as “a superpower for well-being and reducing anxiety.”
When asked what advice he had for other people struggling with similar mental health conditions, Wilson talked about the importance of finding acceptance and community. “This is a really big epidemic, and a lot of times, young people, even though they read about it and hear about it, they feel like they’re suffering alone, and there’s a lot of people [who] are struggling and suffering,” he notes.
“Don’t isolate,” he added. “Whatever that is, it can be a local Dungeons & Dragons game … Pick up, you know, volleyball or wiffle ball, or it can be church service; it can be volunteering with other people. Find that community of like-minded souls. It’s so important.”
