During treatment at FHE Health, you can bring devices such as a cell phone and laptop. How and when you use them depends on your level of care and clinical needs. These guidelines apply across all of our programs, including Restore, our mental health program.
If you’re preparing for treatment, review this page alongside our admissions guide so you know what to expect before you arrive.
Device Guidelines by Level of Care
Detox
During medical detox, which typically lasts around five days, outside communication is limited so you can focus on medical stabilization.
- A short period of limited outside contact may apply after intake
- During that time, contact is reserved for emergency situations
Residential Treatment
In residential addiction treatment and residential mental health treatment, phone and computer use is structured so you can stay connected while treatment comes first.
- Dedicated daily times to stay in touch with loved ones or attend to approved work and school responsibilities
- Computers are available on campus
- Therapy and clinical programming take priority over outside tasks
Outpatient Care
In outpatient treatment, you can make and receive calls anytime outside of scheduled sessions, classes or treatment activities.
Why Electronics May Be Limited
Your phone and other devices help you stay connected to people who support you. Setting aside time away from them also gives you a break from everyday demands while you focus on treatment.
Structured electronics use helps you:
- Reduce outside distractions and stress
- Participate fully in therapy and programming
- Give yourself time to settle into treatment
- Protect your privacy and the privacy of others

Family Connection and Support
Family involvement plays a key role in recovery. Beyond scheduled phone calls, FHE Health offers family workshops with therapists to help you work through challenges, resolve conflicts and build healthy communication habits. What Electronics to Bring and What to Leave at Home
Use discretion when bringing valuable electronics to treatment. While we take reasonable steps to maintain a safe treatment environment, we can’t guarantee the security of personal belongings. Leave expensive, irreplaceable or unnecessary electronics at home.
When you’re packing for treatment, keep it simple: bring what you need, confirm what you’re unsure about and leave valuable or unnecessary items at home. For the rest of your list, see what to pack for rehab.
