What Is TRICARE Health Insurance? Who Uses It?
Finding a Tricare rehab service can seem challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. Tricare coverage applies to those who are a military service member or their family. That typically includes those who are members of the United States Armed Services, including:
- Air Force
- Navy
- Marine Corps
- Coast Guard
- National Guard
- Reserves
- Commission Core
- U.S. Public Health Services
- Commission Core of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association
This policy covers military members, their immediate family, their survivors, and former spouses as well as everyone who has a Medal of Honor and their families.
It’s estimated that 1 in 15 veterans have had a substance use disorder in the previous year, according to data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. About 12.7 percent of vets that joined after September 2001 suffer from a SUD.
How Can Tricare Help You?
Tricare is a comprehensive health plan. It’s important to know there are several types, but most people will find that Tricare covers alcohol and drug rehabilitation. Tricare can provide coverage for:
Drug and Alcohol Detox
Most Tricare policies cover detoxification services if a qualified medical center provides those services. These locations can offer a safe place to detox from chemical dependency.
Detox may include the use of other medications to reduce risks and withdrawal symptoms. Tricare generally covers detox and these types of medical services for covered individuals.
Inpatient Rehabilitation
When it comes to Tricare rehab services, most policies also offer coverage for residential or inpatient care. This includes urgent or acute situations as well as non-emergency care. If you or your loved one shows signs of a psychiatric emergency or is at high risk of suicide or overdose, Tricare can provide financial assistance for immediate inpatient care to support your needs.
Most Tricare policies offer inpatient care for a set number of days. This usually covers detox periods along with the necessary time to medically and psychologically stabilize. If there are any complications, the policy covers those as well.
Some people may need a short-term stay whereas others require long-term care to meet medical needs. Tricare allows doctors and counseling professionals to diagnose your condition, create a treatment plan and begin that treatment plan through inpatient services.
Intensive Outpatient Rehab
At approved Tricare treatment facilities, intensive outpatient rehab is also covered by the program. This type of rehabilitation is necessary for people with active addiction but who may not need inpatient care. In this situation, you live at home but spend a significant amount of time receiving counseling and treatment at the location selected.
In addition, intensive outpatient rehabilitation is beneficial for those transitioning from residential or inpatient care to a halfway house or back home. It offers a higher level of care than traditional counseling but also helps people get ready for living life during recovery.
Tricare provides coverage to most individuals seeking outpatient care. This includes those who have co-occurring mental health disorders such as anxiety, PTSD and depression. The care in an intensive outpatient setting often combines addiction treatment and mental health disorder treatment.
What Are Insurance Plans Obligated to Help with for Alcohol and Drug Addiction?
People with Tricare are entitled to receive care for all of their health needs. This includes mental health disorders and addiction treatment. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 requires that health insurance offer care to patients who have substance use disorders or mental health challenges, as noted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Tricare, along with all other health insurance plans, must treat these conditions the same as they would any other type of health ailment. They must provide coverage for diagnosis and treatment in an approved rehabilitation center. FHE is an approved center for this type of care under most of the Tricare plans.
Types of Tricare Plans
Several types of Tricare coverage exist. You can determine which plan you have by looking at the name on your policy. It should be listed on your insurance card as well, and you can also verify your insurance plan at Tricare mil.
These are the main forms of Tricare.
Tricare Prime
Prime is a common form of Tricare insurance available in some key geographical areas. Your coverage is based on your location but is generally available in large metro areas.
Tricare Prime Remote applies to those who live in more rural and remote regions of the United States. You may also have Tricare Prime Overseas, which applies to some locations for military families located overseas.
Tricare Standard
Tricare Standard is available to many people in the United States. It is a type of fee-for-service plan. This form of coverage does not require enrollment if you meet specific requirements.
Tricare Select
Tricare Select is one of the most common forms, and it requires enrollment based on eligibility. It applies to most active-duty family members, retired service members, activated members of the Guard and Reserves and non-activated Guard and Reserve members and families who also qualify for the Transitional Assistance Management Program. Tricare Select Overseas applies to these members stationed overseas.
Tricare for Life
This form of the plan is available to those who are eligible for Medicare Part A and B. If you have either of these forms of Medicare, you are automatically enrolled in Tricare for Life as a military veteran. You are responsible for Medicare Part B premiums.
Tricare Reserve Select
Tricare Reserve Select is a premium-based plan that is available worldwide. It applies to Select Reserve members and their families. This includes those who are not on active-duty orders, not covered under the Transitional Assistance Management Program and not enrolled in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program.
Tricare Retired Reserve
This is another premium-based plan available worldwide to those who are Select Reserve members and their families. It applies to those who are retired from any Reserve component and under the age of 60. Family members also qualify.
