Registration Now Open for April 23 Car and Truck Show
As part of its commitment to extending the hope of healing, FHE Health has donated to and will be a promoting sponsor for the upcoming “Cars Combatting Cancer Show & Shine” event, which will support the non-profit organization Cancer for College and its educational scholarships for students with cancer.
About Cancer for College
Since its founding in 1993 by two-time cancer survivor and double amputee Craig Pollard, Cancer for College has awarded more than 1,500 need-based scholarships totaling more than $5 million to high-achieving cancer survivors. (Catch more of the organization’s inspiring story here.)
How FHE Health Is Supporting the Event and Organization
Our very own David Deckard is helping to direct the event. Deckard is Senior Financial Consultant at FHE Health. That means he works hand in hand with our admissions and billing departments to improve customer satisfaction and oversee revenue.
Deckard is also a cancer survivor, and after surgery for stage III melanoma 18 months ago and subsequent treatments, is on the road to recovery. (Deckard was first diagnosed with stage II melanoma four years ago, at which time he underwent a first major surgery followed by clinical trial treatments.)
FHE Health is participating in the car and truck show as a “Silver Sponsor,” having donated to the cause. It will also have a booth at the event and will be a promoting sponsor on social media and in our promo materials and T-shirts.
“I Wanted to Use My Car for a Cause” – The Backstory
How did Deckard (and in turn FHE Health) get connected with Cancer for College and the cause of educational scholarships for people with cancer? It started with an exchange with a car salesman in Charlotte, North Carolina. Here is how Deckard recalled it:
The deal was basically done before I got there; I just had to inspect the car and they had to work on the financing. During the long finance wait, my sales guy Steve Mann started talking to me about the charity events their dealership does. I started telling him about the events I participated in for charity back when I lived in New Jersey, and I told him I wanted to use my car for a cause. Steve told me if I ever wanted to follow through with that to give him a call and he would help. It was about as real of a conversation as I’ve ever had with a stranger.
The two men connected again in October. That is when Mann asked Deckard if he’d be interested in “teaming up with a charity that provides need-based scholarships for young adults affected by cancer.”
After checking out Cancer for College’s mission, “I couldn’t say ‘no,’” Deckard said. A few minutes later, he was on the phone with the organization’s national director of donor impact— “and here we are now!”
Deckard said he believes in Cancer for College’s mission, “because at one point I was a teacher and understand the importance of education” … I also understand the financial burden cancer brings, so when I saw the household income of the scholarship recipients, I got even more excited about the cause.”
