South Carolina Opening New Addiction Centers
A group in South Carolina that’s helping addicts and their families is expanding its services. It’s called Faces and Voices of Recovery (FAVOR). FAVOR is an addict support group with a unique approach. The group brings together addicts and families.
One such addict is Danny Kjersgaard. “I can sit across the room and almost see how my parents saw me,” he explained.
“For 10 years I’ve been using heroin. Before that I started with opiates and that back when I was 16,” he said. “I’ve tried every drug that you can ever think of.”
He said he started using heroin when he was in college at 22-years-old. Now, at 32, he said he’s spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the drug over the years.
“It literally ruins your life. You become a slave to that drug,” he said.
The program at FAVOR is “not directly 12 step based,” explained Kjersgaard, who said most of the addicts are also in other programs to help with their recovery. “It’s about people helping people.”
Kjersgaard has tried numerous times to get sober. He said he’s been in 13 institutions, rehabs, and halfway houses.
He and other members say they have hope of recovery after joining FAVOR.
