Music and Creative Expression Specialist
Musician Gary Wayne has been performing in South Florida and across the country for over 40 years. In his role with FHE Health, Mr. Wayne developed and directs a therapeutic music and art program for patients with PTSD, addiction and other mental health conditions. Gary has extensive experience helping patients explore the healing powers of musical and artistic expression for their recovery. Prior to joining FHE, he helped other treatment centers develop similar programs, and 20 years ago developed a drama program for people with disabilities. That program is still in practice today.
In his on-site recording studio, Mr. Wayne encourages patients to write and record their thoughts and feelings in song. For patients who want to take their musical pursuit further, Gary teaches guitar, keyboard, and drums, as well as vocalization. His goal is to give these students a foundation that they can continue to build on after rehab as a way to strengthen their recovery.
Mr. Wayne also facilitates therapeutic songwriting, creative writing, and music therapy groups. In these supportive peer settings, he helps patients utilize music to get in touch with what they’re feeling and to connect with their preferred state of mind. Through improvisation, creative writing, and other therapeutic tools from the musical world, he helps patients develop greater self-awareness, manage difficult emotions, engage in self-discovery and self-development, communicate more effectively and relate in healthier ways to others.
