WWE’s Mike Kanellis Opens Up About Drug Addiction
WWE Superstar Mike Kanellis dislocated his kneecap about three years ago, but the suffering was not limited to his injury. For the past three years, Kanellis found himself suffering from an addiction to prescription pills, which he kept hidden from nearly everyone—including his wife, Maria.
He recently opened up about his struggles with drug addiction on social media, as the caption to an Instagram photo which, according to Kanellis, “was my way of making my wife laugh, during one of the most difficult times in our life.”
“(This picture) symbolizes my decision to get clean from an addiction to prescription drugs,” wrote Kanellis. “It has haunted me for almost 3 years… it really started to spiral out of control this past year and a half. I almost lost everything. Finally, I decided I couldn’t keep hurting my wife or myself this way and I was going to get my life back.”
Kanellis said that without his wife, he would be lost. “She is the strongest, toughest woman I know,” he wrote about his wife, who is known for her time in the WWE in the 2000s. “She has been my rock and my reason for fighting. She has been with me every step of the way and I’ll say it again, I would truly be lost without her.”
“It feels so incredibly wonderful to have my life back and focus on what matters,” wrote Kanellis. “Life has never been better, and every day is a blessing.”
Kanellis wrote his message as a symbol of hope for anyone else who is struggling with drug abuse and addiction. “(Addiction) can and will take everything from you,” he wrote. “If you are struggling, please don’t give up hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, you are not alone. I have your back.”
