PSU Officers Trained On Administering Life-saving Naloxone
Penn State police will begin carrying Naloxone as part of an initiative providing 60,000 naloxone kits across Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.
As reported by StateCollege.com, Penn State University Police will join other local law enforcement in carrying naloxone, a drug that has been a critical tool for first responders dealing with the opioid crisis.
Often referred to by the brand name Narcan, naloxone is a medication, typically administered through nasal spray, that can reverse overdoses by blocking the effects of opiates and opioids.
“Given the rise in incidents of heroin and opiate abuse and fatal overdoses throughout the Commonwealth and the U.S., we believe it is in the best interest of our campus community for our emergency responders to be prepared and equipped to save lives,” said Charlie Noffsinger, assistant vice president for University Police and Public Safety. “Providing these tools, protocols and training to our officers helps further our mission to protect the community.”
Penn State’s naloxone is being funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Gov. Tom Wolf announced in October that the commission would 60,000 naloxone kits to first responders across the commonwealth’s 67 counties.
“Having this tool in our officers’ hands enables them to not only save lives, but also to protect themselves in the event of an accidental drug exposure,” said Keith Morris, chief of police at University Park. “While we hope it’s not something we’ll ever have to use, we know that seconds matter for overdose victims.”
