Ed Sheeran Reveals Struggle with Substance Abuse
Ed Sheeran opened up about the darker side of fame—substance abuse—on Saturday’s episode of the Jonathan Ross Show.
The 26-year-old singer achieved fame relatively suddenly, and said that he never quite got the chance to adjust to being in the industry. “I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to it—and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour,” said Sheeran. “All of the pitfalls people read about, I just found myself slipping into them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.”
“I didn’t really notice it was happening,” he continued. “It just started gradually happening, and some people took me to one side and were like, ‘calm yourself down.’” Sheeran continued to say that substance abuse may be fun to begin with, but he needed the wake-up call. “It all starts off as a party,” he said. “And then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not.”
Ahead of his latest album’s release, the Grammy winner took a year-long hiatus to focus on himself and his work.
“I focused on work, and I can’t work under the influence,” he said. “I can’t write songs under the influence. I can’t perform under the influence—so the more I worked, the less [substance abuse] happened.”
Sheeran said that music and his girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn, helped him get away from the substance abuse side of fame.
“I’ve worked my whole life to get to where I am and you can’t lose that over something you do in your spare time,” said Sheeran.
