Demi Lovato Announces Mental Health Ambassador Status for Global Citizen
In addition to being a singer and actress, Demi Lovato is also well known for being vocal when it comes to body positivity, self-esteem, and mental health. Lovato, who is coming up on six years of sobriety, said that she considers speaking out about mental health and addiction is her “true purpose,” and has been advocating for awareness and reform in many ways.
Lovato is now a partial owner of a rehabilitation facility—one that once went to for her own mental health treatment—and has led several wellness conferences. She also started the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program, a program which helps to provide treatment for those who cannot afford it on their own. The star has also been seen at Congress lobbying for mental health reform.
On Sunday afternoon, Lovato used Instagram to announce another initiative she is taking on: she is now the Mental Health Ambassador for Global Citizen, a “social action platform” that advocates for social change via social media. Her first order of business will be to focus on providing healing, psychological support and basic education to displaced children in Iraq through Save the Children’s HEART (Healing and Education Through the Arts) Program.
“My hope is that this program can bring a bit of comfort to those who need the most,” wrote Lovato. “This isn’t about politics or race or religion. It’s simply about humanity and protecting one another.”
