The Focus of Providing a Gender Specific Program

In battling the disease of addiction, gender has been identified as a factor that plays a significant role in addiction treatment and recovery. There is substantial research that indicates substance abuse among women, and the issues surrounding their abuse, differs from that of men, and vice-versa. Our gender specific addiction treatment programs recognize the need for comprehensive addiction treatment targeted respectively to men and women.

Addressing the Specific Issues Surrounding Women’s Addictions

The Florida House Experience provides fully integrated gender specific treatment programs for drug addiction and alcoholism. At our nationally recognized drug addiction treatment center, we provide the facilities and the clinical and medical professionals to support both a men’s program and women’s program for all levels of addiction treatment. Our gender specific programs enhance the eventual outcome and effectiveness of addiction treatment, due in part to providing men and women with separate housing.

Specialized Women’s Program for Addiction Treatment & Addiction Recovery

The effects on women who suffer from drug addiction and/or alcoholism can be different than that of men. Female substance abusers have been associated with certain specific consequences of drug addiction that male substance abusers may not. For example, among the common consequences of female substance abuse are low self esteem, lack of traditional job skills, depression, lack of a strong value system, and lack of a social support network.

As a result of drug addiction and alcoholism, women tend to exhibit lower levels of self esteem and higher levels of depression than men. Other gender specific differences associated with drug addiction and alcoholism include the initial reason for substance abuse, consequences of their drug addiction or alcoholism, social and familial barriers for entering treatment, addiction treatment needs, potential for relapse, and recovery support. Our gender specific Women’s Program for drug treatment and alcohol treatment recognizes these findings and addresses them within the infrastructure of the program. Research has shown that women react more positively to addiction treatment when they enroll in a gender specific addiction treatment program.

The Florida House Experience Women’s Program addresses health, relationship issues, and life challenges associated with female substance abuse. Our clinical and medical professionals emphasize spiritual, biological, social, and psychological issues surrounding women and the disease of addiction. Our Women’s Program addresses specific treatment needs and relapse prevention issues unique to women and provides a safe place for women to regain control of their lives. Of the men who suffer from alcoholism and drug addiction, a certain percentage will relapse after completing an addiction treatment program, leaving them with a sense of failure and discouragement in their battle with alcoholism and drug addiction.
